Edmonton Renovation Show to explore the power of powder rooms.

Powder rooms, often overlooked in favour of kitchens and primary bathrooms, have quietly become one of the most expressive spaces in home design. At the 2026 Edmonton Renovation Show, running Jan. 30 to Feb. 1 at the Edmonton Expo Centre, that shift takes centre stage through a new immersive feature titled Polished Powder Rooms.
The curated feature brings together four local Edmonton designers, including Jennifer Hughes, founder and head designer of Turquoise Chair. Hughes will contribute a detailed design mood board as part of the feature, offering visitors a practical yet elevated look at how thoughtful choices can transform even the smallest spaces.
Why powder rooms are the perfect place to take risks
Renovation activity remains strong across Alberta, with bathrooms ranking just behind kitchens as one of the most renovated spaces in the home. Designers say powder rooms are where homeowners are most willing to experiment. “All-white interiors are giving way to more expressive design choices,” says Hughes. She emphasizes the appeal and warmth that comes with the new trend: Colour-drenching.
Colour-drenching involves painting the ceiling, walls, doors, and trim in a single rich shade, creating a cohesive and dramatic effect. For homeowners who prefer a more neutral palette, Hughes says warmth and personality can still be achieved.
The space is compact, so pattern and colour can be used more confidently. Designers often recommend pairing wallpaper with wainscoting or panel moulding on the lower half of the walls to add architectural interest and protect against everyday wear. When durability is less of a concern, covering the room from floor to ceiling creates a bold, immersive look that instantly transforms the space. You can bring in buttery cream and terracotta hues, and warmer metals such as polished nickel and bronze, she adds. Because powder rooms are small and not typically used for long periods of time, designers see them as ideal spaces for bold choices, statement lighting, and distinctive finishes without the cost of a full bathroom renovation.
Designing on a budget without sacrificing style
One of the key messages behind Polished Powder Rooms is that strong design does not require a large footprint or an unlimited budget. Trends in powder room design favour high-impact details used strategically. A petite sink paired with brass hardware, large-scale floral wallpaper or painted baseboards that pull a tone directly from the wall covering can elevate a space instantly. Even mirrors are being reimagined, with vintage or dark wood picture frames repurposed to add character at a lower cost. Tile is another popular way to make a statement. Designers are using graphic patterns and rich colour combinations sparingly, allowing homeowners to indulge in materials they love without needing a large quantity. If there is any room to embrace bold finishes, designers agree, it is the powder room.
More than a design feature
Polished Powder Rooms is part of a larger lineup of experiences at the Edmonton Renovation Show, which continues to attract homeowners, renovators, and design enthusiasts from across the region. Attendees at the show will also hear from leading voices in home improvement. This year’s presenters include Kenny Brain of Home Network’s upcoming Life Is Messy, Sebastian Clovis, and Kristen Coutts of Beer Budget Reno, who will share renovation insights, trend forecasts, and practical advice for projects of all sizes. Whether guests are planning a full renovation or looking for ideas to refresh a single room, the show offers hands-on inspiration, expert guidance, and locally rooted design solutions.
A fresh start for the new year
As the new year begins, Polished Powder Rooms offers a reminder that meaningful updates do not always require major construction. Sometimes, the most impactful transformations happen in the smallest spaces. For homeowners looking to start the year on trend and on budget, inspiration may be just a powder room away.
