OPENING NEW DOORS

OPENING NEW DOORS
Several years ago our members let us know we needed to get more involved in their commodity wood purchases. Taken together, commodity wood, treated lumber and engineered wood products represent the single-largest category of product purchases by our membership, but it was clear Sexton Group needed to add much more value for the members in these categories.
A core group of Sexton members formed a Commodity Wood Council, and with their insight we developed a winning strategy for these products. We started implementing that strategy four years ago when we hired Rick Royce, in our view the best and most knowledgeable Commodity Wood Manager in Canada. Then, in 2017, we hired Mike Fraser, formerly ALPA’s Senior Commodity Purchaser. Rick and Mike brought in a wealth of key mill relationships that led us to a host of new vendors across Canada. As a direct result, our members now have buying opportunities they never had before. Rick and Mike’s experience has also allowed us to negotiate treated lumber programs that have added hundreds of thousands of dollars to our members’ bottom lines.
Additionally, our members also now have access to weekly market reports based on the latest information gathered from their fellow members, the producing mills and our distributor partners. Making good decisions in an uncertain market depends on having access to insightful, unbiased, current information, and Sexton Group provides that.
Our distributor partners are by far the most important element in our commodity wood purchasing strategy and will be for the foreseeable future. Their purchase volumes with Sexton Group members continue to grow every year.
